Windows 7 AddDLLDirectory Error

After reinstalling Windows 7 and then tried to install the network driver for the computer the driver installation application displayed the following error "The procedure entry point AddDLLDirectory could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

This error occurred because the driver installation was newer than the unpatched Windows 7 OS and required an updated AddDLLDirectory module that didn't exist. The solution is to do the following.

1. Turn off the Microsoft Windows Updates

2. Download and install the Microsoft KB3020369

3. Reboot the computer

4. Download and install the Microsoft KB3172605

5. Reboot the computer

6. Install the original failed driver that brought you here in the first place.

Note that it is important to reboot after each of the update as well as turning of the Microsoft Windows Update before getting started. Failure to do this will result in the updates not installing.
